'Tis Friday, and the children are with us this weekend. We go out for fast food (usually McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, or Burger King) on Fridays because they have play places for the kids. Tonight was McD's. At one point, Robin said she had to go potty. There is a restroom in the play place, but it was occupied. We gave her permission to go to the adult restroom since she "really had to go". Soon, Meg went to check on her. Hmmm...no Robin. Meg came back to the play area, thinking Robin had returned without checking in with us...but nooo... Next, it was my turn to go look for her. Two little girls came out of the women's room...but no Robin. In desperation, I asked a 20-something young man at a nearby table if he would do me the favor of checking the men's room. "I'm missing a little girl, and I'm wondering if she could be in there." He said he felt a little awkward looking for a girl in the men's room, but he checked and said there was someone in the stall and it looked like it could be a little girl. Since there were no other "patrons" in there, I stuck my head in the door and said, "Robin? You're in the wrong restroom!" By this time, the diners at the tables behind me were chuckling. I got Robin out of there in a hurry--at least before anyone else needed to use it! She hadn't been confused. She KNOWS which restroom symbol is the right one. It's just that the stalls in the ladies' room were full, and she reiterated that she "really had to go"... Since I teach eighth grade, nothing embarrasses me anymore...but this episode came close!
Garage remodel update: the wallboard went up today. It isn't taped or mudded yet, but 'tis up (and tracked all over the house). The window hasn't come yet, so I am thinking that will be the biggest obstacle to getting things done faster. I think I have to buy an overhead fixture for the closet ceiling, but everything else is here!
Interestingly, on the day that the construction guys started putting in wiring, the central air conditioner quit working. It was humming, but the fan on the condenser unit wasn't coming on, so I shut it down and asked the builder to check on it. He wrote me an email today saying that it didn't have an electrical wire to the breaker box. Huh?? He was suggesting that someone might have stolen it for scrap, but that didn't make any sense to me... One of my ham friends is in the heating/cooling business, so he is coming over tomorrow to look at it. Since the breakers were being thrown in construction, etc., he seems to think it could be a blown fuse at the unit. I'm hoping it's that simple...and he's a dear for taking time out of his weekend to check on it for me. The weather has been quite cool so no need for AC now...but it IS mid-May...
Tonight, Meg has been doing genealogy work on her computer, the children have been watching rented videos, and Grandma has been vegging in front of a monitor. Need to find the kitchen table for the weekend...and do endless laundry. Three more weeks of school!!
