Loooong Day

Students were dismissed at 11:00 today. Teachers had an hour for lunch on their own. Conferences started at noon. Then supper on the district between 4:00 and 5:00 (pizza), and conferences thereafter. The conferences were supposed to end at 7:00, but I still had parents waiting to see me. I finally got out about 7:40. Got home about 8:15 after making a short grocery stop. Ahm tard! I feel like I've been talking all day long, when (in fact) I have!

Parent conferences are a necessary evil. I never regret touching bases with the parents because I always gain insight into their children. Some of the stories are heart-wrenching. One "parent" is actually an aunt who left Texas to come and raise her sister's two boys who were orphaned when a car wreck killed their mother and sister. I admire the dickens out of her for what she has done for those boys--both good kids. Another of my students lost his father to cancer 1 1/2 years ago, only a year after he lost his grandfather to cancer. This is his first year in public school after being homeschooled since the beginning. He is still grieving and adjusting...and I didn't know all of this until tonight. Young'uns dealing with adult issues that even adults probably wouldn't handle well! God bless them all!

I don't have to be at school tomorrow until 8:00. Good! I can use the extra 30 minutes of sleep!
